Store silver jewelry in a cool, dry place away from air and humidity, ideally in an anti-tarnish pouch or a sealed bag with an anti-tarnish strip. Keep pieces separate so they do not scratch one another, and store turquoise and other stones away from direct heat and sunlight to protect their color.
Tarnish is a chemical reaction. Sterling silver darkens when it meets moisture and sulfur compounds in the air, so the goal of good storage is simply to keep air and humidity away from the metal. The drier and more sealed the environment, the slower silver tarnishes β and the less polishing your pieces will ever need.
Use the right container. Anti-tarnish pouches and cloths, or a sealed bag or box with an anti-tarnish strip or a packet of silica gel, dramatically slow oxidation. Store each piece separately so harder stones and edges cannot scratch softer silver, and lay necklaces flat or hang them so chains do not kink or tangle.
Mind the stones as well as the metal. Turquoise, coral, and other porous stones can fade or dry out with heat and strong light, so keep jewelry out of direct sunlight and away from radiators, windowsills, and hot cars. A cool, dark drawer is better for turquoise than a sunny dresser top.
A few small habits help. Put jewelry on last when dressing and take it off before swimming, showering, or cleaning, so perfume, lotion, sunscreen, and chlorine never reach it. Wiping a piece with a soft cloth after wear removes the oils and moisture that start tarnish before they have a chance to act.
Stored well, fine silver and turquoise stay bright for years with little effort. For routine cleaning, the gentle methods that work, and the few products to avoid, see our care notes and our guide to cleaning tarnished silver.
