How Pueblo potters sign their work

A potter’s signature is the name, initials or symbol a potter writes or incises on a piece. Of the 249 entries here, 249 record a written or incised signature, 108 include the name of the pueblo in the signature, and 62 record a pictured symbol beside or in place of a name.

Signing was not always the practice. Wikipedia’s article on Maria Martinez of San Ildefonso notes that her and Julian Martinez’s “oldest works were all unsigned,” that “the pieces signed as ‘Marie’ were made between 1923 and 1925,” and that “Marie + Julian” remained the signature until Julian’s death in 1943. A signature can therefore help place a piece in time as well as point to its maker. (Source: Wikipedia, “Maria Martinez”)

A signature is a lead to a maker, not proof of who made a piece: family members can sign alike, and one signature can be recorded for more than one potter. 4 entries are marked “Possible attribution” because the record links the signature to the potter in hedged or unconfirmed terms. To match a mark you are holding, use identify a mark; to send us a mark that is missing, use submit a mark. Our guide explains how to read a hallmark, and the full index includes silversmiths too.
