Spiny oyster is a shell, not a stone: the thick, colorful shell of the Spondylus mollusk from the Gulf of California, also called the Sea of Cortez. It comes in purple, orange, red and yellow. Spiny oyster shell was traded into the Southwest from the Pacific coast more than a thousand years ago, and it is a staple of Native American inlay and bead work. Sterling silver is 92.5% pure silver, often stamped.925, alloyed with copper for strength. It develops a soft patina over time that a silver polishing cloth removes. Store earrings in pairs, away from moisture, and wipe them with a soft cloth; keep chemical silver dips away from stones and shell.
The shell of Spondylus, harvested in the Gulf of California. Orange to red with natural banding; used in inlay, heishi and cluster work.

Organic and soft — wipe with a dry cloth only, and avoid water, heat, and chemicals. Buff with a soft polishing cloth — leaving intentional oxidation intact — and store airtight to slow tarnish.
